The fifth project: What do you think we miss in our product range?

From bike wear to bike accessories and bike parts, we have 1500+ products in our range, devided over 50 product categories. Virtually all cyclists can find the product they need at BBB. As a member of the ThinkTank you may tell us what you think we miss in our product range when it comes down to riding your bike. In fifteen years we gained over 50 awards with our products. The WinterStop gloves were the first in 2000. They won a comparison test between four gloves in the Dutch Mountainbike Plus Magazine. Till today the Squadra Bib-shorts is the last Award Winning product, being test winner in their shorts test. The fourth project: Ergonomic grips

After a long period of testing and finetuning the BBB product development team developed new ergonomic grips with an improved anatomic shape. As customizing your bike becomes more and more popular we do not only want to improve the shape but also optimize the looks. The third project: Force womens jersey

Measurement:

To determine your glove size you can measure the length and diameter of your hand as illustrated above and by using the corresponding explanation:
A) Measure from the tip of your longest finger to the base of your palm at the wrist to determine the length of your hand. This is your hand length measurement.
B) Wrap the tape measure around your hand at the widest part of the palm and make a fist before taking the measurement. This is your hand width measurement.

Use these measurements of your hand to determine your glove size in the gloves sizing chart. Remember the BBB gloves size chart is a reference, based on the average BBB glove. Since we offer a wide range of gloves in different styles and materials, you should always try the gloves at your local BBB Cycling dealer. Then we can ensure the best fit and comfort.

The second project: Casual glasses

BBB already has a wide range of sport glasses (click here). Our intension is to add casual sunglasses to complete the BBB eyewear range. The casual sunglasses should not only protect your eyes against sunlight, dust and wind. They should also make you look cool when you’re off the bike. That’s where you can help us!  The first project: Handlebar tape

Handlebar tape isn’t the first product which you think about of when thinking of bicycle parts with a lot of technical input. But what about thickness, structure, fixation and color of the handlebar tape? They all have influence on how much you enjoy your rides. That’s why BBB ThinkTank’s first project is about this important cycling gear. By completing a short questionnaire the ThinkTank user will contribute to the development of a new BBB handlebar tape. Among the respondents BBB will give away 10 BBB RaceRibbon handlebar tapes.

The results of the survey will be published in the ThinkTank, so afterwards you can see what the opinion of other cyclists was. And of course, maybe even more important, what BBB will do with their opinion. Prize winners and invitations for the upcoming BBB ThinkTank-projects will be shown to members on the BBB Cycling Facebook newsfeed.

The co-operation we have with some of the best on and off road cyclists around is not only for publicity’s sake. Partnering with professional teams provides an incredibly valuable testing ground for our products and allows us access to feedback and ideas from the pro’s. The feedback we get back from these extremely demanding users, is directly feedback into further improvement of our products. Zdenek Stybar used BBB brake pads on his CX world championship bike in 2011. The Select sport glasses were tested in the Tour de France 2011 and, based on the feedback received from the Vacansoleil-DCM riders, the shape was slightly enhanced. The final design of the AirBlaster floorpump is the result of feedback from the mechanics the professional teams. Prototypes of the new top of the range Icarus helmet were tested by the Vacansoleil-DCM and Cofidis riders in the Tour de France 2012. By wearing them day by day for three weeks, they could tell us exactly what we had to improve. Together with them we develop the best products, to make your cycling as comfortable as possible.

In 2013 BBB will also be present in the peloton, by sponsoring various teams with world class riders provided with our products:

At the prestigious Eurobike Award Ceremony several awards were handed out in the categories bicycles, clothing and parts & accessories. This year BBB had something to celebrate; a Eurobike Award with our Traveller minipump, a smart minipump with floorpump characteristics. For many years BBB has proven that the products are of high quality, meanwhile the amount of award winners has come close to 50. This Eurobike Award is a reward for all the work that has been done so far.

The men created a memorable evening. Surprisingly Felix Beckeman won the title, not Tomas Slavik, Michal Prokop or Joost Wichman. The first turn caused a lot of trouble. The results were unpredictable. Many all or nothing moves and some discussion about possible disqualifications. Total anarchy… In the end Daniel was 8th, Joost 9th and Petrik 18th.

The teams will give their final feedback on the Icarus during their race through France. Together with riders such as Wout Poels, Johnny Hoogerland, David Moncoutié and Rein Taaramae BBB will enter the final part of the development project. The BBB Icarus will be available towards the end of 2012.

BBB used the feedback given about the current top-notch helmet, the Falcon, to design the new Icarus. Creating a more compact, lightweight, more comfortable helmet with even better ventilation properties. BBB created more ventilation by introducing the Airflow
Cooling System (ACS). This means that the 29 air vents have an optimized shape for better ventilation and the adjustable straps have an open structure to allow airflow. Besides the use of Quick Dry padding with Silver Protection and anti-bacterial treatment absorb moistureeven better.

Of course airflow is important, but BBB does not forget the primary function of a helmet; protection. In order to create a lighter and safer helmet, BBB uses a double In-mold shell construction. This means that during manufacturing process the outer polycarbonate shell en the high density EPS foam are bonded together. Besides an extra polycarbonate internal reinforcement web structure is bonded as well. A SpiderWeb reinforcement is added to the backside of the helmet to protect you if you crash on the back of your head.

A comfortable fit is not only created by the shape and airflow of the Icarus. The BBB FlexClose adjustment system is adjustable in height and length but also flexible to fit around your head perfectly. The new BBB strap dividers are also extra comfortable. They do not only divide the straps in an angle, the inside has got less material in order to prevent irritation on your cheeks.

The Icarus will come in two sizes, M (55-58 cm) and L (58-62 cm) and 5 color combinations; black/white, metallic black/neon yellow, white/blue, white/red and matt white/silver.
The BBB Icarus, available in the stores at the end of this year, will cost approximately € 169,95.

The German XC and marathon Champion beat, after a heroic battle in the mud of Moscow (Russia), Sergio Gutiérrez in the sprint. Ralph Näf completed the podium. This victory will give him another boost in his preparation for the highlight of this season, the XC Race at the London Olympic Games.

Besides the product testing BBB also prepares helmets for the Tour de France classifications. So all sponsored teams are provided with yellow, green, white and polka dot helmet in case of. These helmets waiting for a rider that is allowed to wear it, are also an extra motivation for some rider. Last year for example Johnny Hoogerland already pronounced before the start of the Tour that he would love to wear the polka dot Falcon helmet. And who doesn’t remember that he did!

The Vacansoleil – DCM Pro Cycling Team will start this Tour de France with:

Let’s hope David Moncoutié will win his first Tour de France mountain jersey after four Vuelta a Espana. And maybe Rein Taaramae will be able to keep the white jersey till Paris. The Estonian rider wasted the lead in the young rider classification in the last days of the Tour 2011. Hopefully the visit to the wind tunnel test last year to finetune the aerodynamic design of our TriBase time trail and triathlon helmet will help him out.
Team Cofidis will be supplied by BBB with helmets, pumps, bags, cycling computers, fenders, brake shoes and tools.
David Moncoutié will also rtide with BBB sport glasses.

No braking in!

Braking in is not necessary with BBB DiscStops. Our pads get a special treatment during production. This treatment creates the same effect as what you will get when braking in; the braking surface will harden, which will extend the lifetime and increase the braking power. Braking in is something that a lot of users forget or even do not know about. Without braking in your brake pads they wear out quicker. BBB offers brake pads for virtually every system on the market today. Color-codes will point you straight to the packaging of the pads that are compatible with your brake system. We closely follow the developments on brakes systems, and update our compatibility list when necessary. As most of the new systems use existing pad types we need to let you know which BBB DiscStop type is compatible. Therefore the new packaging is provided with a QR-code. Scanning this QR-code will connect you directly to the
webpage of the corresponding disc brake pad. On this page you can find the most up-to-date compatibility information.

Blue or Metal-backed?

Besides compatibility BBB offers two version of most types of DiscStops. You can choose between blue or metal-backed pads. Our blue BBB DiscStop brake pads feature an organic compound braking surface. These pads have optimal performance level at average temperature and are therefore suitable for cross-country riding.
Our metal-backed BBB DiscStop brake pads feature a sintered compound braking surface. These pads perform best at higher temperatures and are therefore more suitable for downhill and freeriding.

Paris-Nice

Especially Paris-Nice was impressive. Gustav Erik Larsson wins the prologue (after wind tunnel tests with our TriBase T/T helmet), Lieuwe Westra won the Queen stage in which Frederik Veuchelen conquered the mountain jersey. Thomas de Gendt showed his stage victories last year weren’t a coincidence by winning the 7th stage. Besides, Westra became 2nd in the last time trail.

Tirrenno-Adriatico

Johnny Hoogerland and Wout Poels showed themselves in Tirreno Adriatico. The two leaders of the Vacansoleil-DCM squad finished top-ten in the mountain stages. Moreover in all stages, besides the time trails, a Vacansoleil-DCM rider finished top ten and the team won the day team classification two times. With the 8th place in the general classification Poels was the best young rider and won the white jersey.

Driedaagse De Panne-Koksijde

In Belgium Lieuwe Westra finished 2nd in the time trail of the Driedaagse De Panne-Koksijde for the fourth year in a row. And for the second time in a row that wasn’t enough for the overall victory. But Westra in getting closer. Last year he lost with 6 seconds, now it where just 4 seconds. So in 2014 Lieuwe will probably win this races!

At the XC “Test event” in the Cascades MTB Park (RSA) a week before the first World Cup race of the year, the BMC MTB Racing Team delivered an outstanding performance. German Champion Moritz Milatz became 4th in the race of 6 very technically challenging laps. Patrick Gallati was close on his tail who managed an outstanding 5th place finish.  The performance by Reto Indergand (17th), Stephen Ettinger (19th) and Julien Taramarcaz (32nd) also made the BMC MTB Team hopeful before the World Cup kicks off in Pietermaritzburg.

While the elite riders are in South Africa for the sunny conditions, in the first round of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Pietermaritzburg they literally had a race against time to finish before the rain hit. Just as Nino Schurter (Scott-Swisspower) successfully defended his title against home favourite Burry Stander (Specialized), the rain began to fall, and was torrential by the time the awards ceremony took place. In the six-lap race, Moritz Milatz again was the best BMC MTB Racing team rider. The German finished almost 4 minutes behind Schurter. Stephen Ettinger (46^th), Julien taramarcaz (50^th) and Patrick Gallati (59^th) also
collected their first World Sup points for this season.

From 25 March till 1 April Alexandre Moos and Moritz Miltaz will defend the honor of the BMC MTB Racing Team in the 9^th Absa Cape Epic. On www.facebook.com/BBBcycling we will keep you posted about their results.

A part of the good winter preparation included a visit to the Magny Cours wind tunnel in France, exclusively arranged for the time trails specialists of Vacansoleil-DCM. The wind tunnel of the former Prost Grand Prix Racing team helped the riders to find their optimum time trail position. Besides checking the position on the bike, they also optimized their BBB Cycling TriBase time Trail helmet. ThermoLayer

The BBB Thermolayer (BUW-11/12/15/16) is also highly appreciated. The editors of Cycling Weekly (UK) were very pleased with this base layer for colder days. The editors especially liked the ability to keep yourself dry and warm, confirming this by labeling the ThermoLayer as “Highly Recommended”.

DiscStop

The German Bike Magazine test last April confirmed what we were convinced about: our DiscStop disc brake pads are ‘Sehr Gut’ (very good)! But it is always nice to have that confirmed by more magazines. So the test result of the German magazine Mountainbike was not a complete surprise, but again an endorsement. In the test the DiscStop is the only one who gets the mark “Outstanding”, against other brands such as Shimano, Koolstop, SwissStop and Trickstuff. The DiscStops are praised for their braking power, modulation and very little wear. In the next newsletter you can read All About DiscStop brake pads.             

FHM500

BBB does not only appear in cycling magazines. We received the Dutch FHM 500, with the 500 most beautiful Dutch women. And although Savine Boersema is ‘only’ on the 500th place, we think that’s quite an achievement having 8,4 million women in Holland! And we think she has the potential to be in the top 100 if she wears a complete BBB Team outfit.
