Meet Alexey Schebelin

The man, the myth, the Russian

Meet Alexey Schebelin, the man who’s won the monstrous Red Bull Trans-Siberian Extreme. Not once, but two years in a row.

Congrats on winning the Red Bull Trans-Siberian Extreme two years in a row! What does it take to finish such a race?

This race does not forgive any mistakes! You must be 100% ready. Not only physically, but also technically (meaning the bike and choice of equipment). Therefore, you should only pick the absolute best. Coach, equipment, and bicycle!

You are from Russia and from what we know, it can be pretty cold there in the winter. How do you train when it’s really cold?

Cold? Which cold? Is it cold? It’s just minus 20 degrees (laughs really hard). When the weather is like that you simply take the MTB bike, get dressed and go to training. Of course, I also use rollers, work out in the gym, and on a simulator!

Why do you cycle, what does cycling mean to you?

Oh, man. It’s a long story, but for me riding my bike is life. It’s energy and lots of big emotions. Stuff I need to live, without it, I cannot exist on this planet.

Which cycling performance are you most proud of?

When I was a professional cyclist, every victory was important for me. Because I wanted to grab them all and that made it difficult. But the Red Bull Trans-Siberian Extreme was the most difficult race, and that is why I can be super proud of it. Funny enough it was not even about winning it, but even more about proving to myself that I could endure all the difficulties!

What do you do to calm your pre-race nerves?

It’s probably easier to answer that question now, than when I still rode pro. Today for me cycling is a hobby and a passion, and not work anymore. So I can enjoy it more. And even if there is a racer stronger than me, I can just smile and shake his hand. Therefore, I don’t worry before the start anymore. Seeing me at the start should make the other guys nervous, hahaha!

What’s an interesting fact about yourself that not a lot of people know?

I don’t like to train, it’s hard. But I like to win!

Donut icing or the donut base?

An icy donut, I’m from Russia! (we think he didn’t understand our question too, but like his answer nevertheless).

What’s your next big cycling goal?

Since I work as a coach, I have not set big goals for the next year yet. I just started to practice triathlon and race MTB. For the future, I have started looking at RAAM, the Race Across America … Perhaps in 2-3 years. But it’s very hot there, and here in St. Petersburg it’s cold. I need to find time to prepare for hot conditions!
