Our online marketeer reveals his 2017 plans

2017 is at full force, which means that a lot of people are working on their goals. Every week we will put one Goalchaser in the spotlight, whether it’s one of our colleagues, sponsored riders or Backyard Crew members. First up in our Goalchasers series is Paul Helderman, Online Marketeer at BBB Cycling. We asked him a couple of questions regarding his goals for 2017.

Paul Helderman

Who are you and what do you do

I’m Paul, Online Marketeer at BBB Cycling. I’m participating in road cycling competitions since I was a child. I raced classics as a semi-professional cyclist in Europe for several years. Now the focus is more on family and work. But as I still like the game of being in competition, each season I participate in up to 30 crit races in the Netherlands. It also helps me to stay in shape J.

How did 2016 go for you?

I had a great start of the season, where maybe things went to easy. So I forgot to stay focussed, causing me not to be at 100% in the summer (the period when I wanted to be at my best). Luckily at the end of the summer I found my top form and managed to finish within the top 5 several times. It gives me extra motivation in preparation on 2017!

Aiming for the stars

How do you plan to achieve this goal?

In contrast to last year, my winter training rides are less intense. That way I can still improve during the spring races and be at my best in the summer.

Planning ahead

What does your training look like?

Three times a week I’m commuting between home and the BBB headquarters, 30 kilometres one way. During the season I have an extra training in the evening. The weekends in the winter are used for longer training rides with my team and in the summer they are used for the races. I also like to do some standard core stability exercises twice a week at home.

Any tips for fellow cyclists to get the most out of the year?

Don’t always focus on the numbers which are on your cycling computer or smartphone app. Enjoy your environment and the fact of being out there while training and/or being in competition!
